A Closer Look at Presbyopia

As the body ages its functionality begins to deteriorate. Unfortunately, this is one of the common truths of life. Our bodies can only take so such before they begin to wear down. Eyesight is one of those things that begin to deteriorate as we age. Many elderly people find that even though they might have had perfect sight in their youth, old has caused their vision to diminish. When the eye exhibits a diminished ability to focus on near objects, a problem that gets progressively worse with age, it is called presbyopia.

Although no one knows for sure why vision can deteriorate with age, some scientists believe it can be attributed to the loss of elasticity in the crystalline lens of the eye. Another theory is that the ciliary muscles, the ones we use to bend and straighten the eye’s lens, begin to lose power as we age. Presbyopia is the reason why you might wager the elderly holding books or newspapers farther away from their eyes in an attempt to read the words on the page. In fact, the difficulty in reading fine print is one of the first symptoms of presbyopia.

The problem can become increasingly noticeable in low light situations, making it difficult for someone with presbyopia to read without the proper lighting. Because presbyopia is part of the human old process, it is usually incurable. However, with the proper eyeglasses and nonindulgent lenses especially for use when reading, some old adults with presbyopia experience such improvement in their ability to wager objects or words that are near. Bifocals are also a helpful option for many. Contact lenses can also prove to be helpful to those who undergo from presbyopia.
